Over half of Romanians trust the United States and the United Kingdom (survey)

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

Over half of Romanians trust the United States and the United Kingdom, according to the Barometrul Informat.ro - INSCOP Research survey conducted between 26-30 May 2025.

According to the sociological research, the U.S. leads the trust ranking among countries, with 52.8% of respondents stating they have quite a lot or very much trust in the country.

'The U.S. is followed by the United Kingdom with 52.7% trust, then France with 45.3%, and the Republic of Moldova with 40.7%. The ranking continues with Hungary (22%), Ukraine (21.7%), China (21.4%), and Russia (11.2%),' the source mentions.

The highest level of trust in the U.S is seen among Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Alliance for Romanians' Union (AUR) voters and people over the age of 60, according to the survey data.

Likewise, National Liberal Party PNL and Save Romania Union (USR) voters, those with higher education, and residents of Bucharest are especially likely to trust the United Kingdom, France and the Republic of Moldova.

'There are no major variations in trust in Hungary across socio-demographic categories. PNL and USR voters, individuals with higher education, and residents of Bucharest tend to trust Ukraine more than the rest of the population. AUR voters and people under 30 years old are the demographic groups with the highest level of trust in Russia,' the report reads.

'For the first time in recent years, the United States returns to the top of the country trust rankings due to balanced trust levels across most population categories. The United Kingdom and France have been overtaken, mainly due to significantly lower trust among AUR voters. Trust in the Republic of Moldova is relatively high (40%) but considerably lower among AUR voters (19%), likely due to recent electoral context. A stark contrast is seen in regard to trust in Russia - 11% at national level - but with major differences across political party electorates: 8% of PSD voters trust Russia, 3% of PNL voters, 1% of USR voters, and 21% of AUR voters,' said Remus Stefureac, Director of INSCOP Research.

The Barometrul Informat.ro - INSCOP Research is a monthly public opinion poll conducted by INSCOP Research, commissioned by the news platform Informat.ro, in partnership with the think tank Strategic Thinking Group.

Data was collected between 26-30 May 2025 via the CATI method (telephone interviews). The simple, stratified sample size was 1,150 people, representative across significant socio-demographic categories (gender, age, occupation) for Romania's non-institutionalised population aged 18 and over. The maximum margin of error is ±2.9%, at a 95% confidence level. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Anamaria Constantin; EN - writing by: Adina Panaitescu)
