President Dan: State institutions, including intelligence services, need to be concerned more with tax evasion

President Nicusor Dan on Tuesday stated that we have a problem with large-scale tax evasion and that it is necessary for institutions, including the intelligence services, to deal with this issue, indicating that there is a discussion about whether the National Defence Strategy needs to be modified in this regard.
He was asked if he would hire more IT specialists to see what happened in the 2024 presidential elections, as he said during the electoral campaign, for a discussion in the Supreme Council of National Defence.
'It is not the first, first emergency now. The emergencies are the deficit and the Government. Immediately after. I am very interested in this matter. What did I say? I said that we have a big problem related to the deficit with the large-scale tax evasion and it is necessary for the institutions, including the intelligence, to be concerned with this problem and there is a discussion whether or not it is necessary to modify the National Defence Strategy in this sense,' said Nicusor Dan.
On Monday, president Nicusor Dan stated that the effects of combating the large-scale tax evasion will be seen next year, and there are efforts made in this regard.
'Concerning the large-scale tax evasion, I had a discussion with the interim prime minister, Mr. Predoiu, last night, and he said that he is checking whether we need to make a change in the National Defence Strategy so that we focus more state forces on combating this phenomenon,' Nicusor Dan told a press conference held in Vilnius.
He referred to the possible effects of combating tax evasion.
'We are now in a situation where we have to convey to the financial market, to investors, some measures for the second half of 2025. Combating large-scale tax evasion - I am optimistic that we will do it, but its effects will be seen in 2026,' the president said.
According to official sources, the Supreme Council of National Defence will be convened in June, to include combating large-scale tax evasion in the National Defence Strategy. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Florentina Peia, EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
