Paddlers Nuta and Sprincean through to men's C2 1000m final at Canoe Sprint World Championships in Samarkand
Romanian canoe sprinters Oleg Nuta and Ilie Sprincean qualified on Friday to the final of the men's C2 1000m event of the ICF Canoe Kayak Sprint World Championships in Samarkand (Uzbekistan).
Competing in the second heat, Nuta and Sprincean from CSA Steaua placed second with 3:44:713, after Hungary (3:43:002), but ahead of the Republic of Moldova (3:49:731). These three crews qualified directly for the final of the event, scheduled for Saturday.
At the Paris Olympic Games, Nuta and Sprincean finished 9th in the C2 500m race.
Canoeist Catalin Chirila will also make his debut on Friday afternoon in the men's C1 500m heats. The 26-year-old athlete from CSA Steaua is the reigning world champion in this event. At the Paris Olympics he finished ninth in the C1 1000m event.
Chirila will also hit the water on Saturday in the C1 200m heats.
At the 2023 ICF Canoe Sprint and Paracanoe World Championships in Duisburg Romania won the men's C1 500m title and silver in the men's C1 1000m event through Catalin Chirila, plus a bronze medal in the men's C2 1,000m event through Nuta and Sprincean.
