Muntii Macinului Natural Park, part of TREEADS European project for sustainable forest management

More than a hundred experts in the forestry field participate in the European project TREEADS, Macin Mountains Natural Park, launched in February 2022, which aims to increase the effectiveness of fire management and, in the conditions of climate change, of the sustainable management of forests, informs a press release of the Association of Foresters in Romania (ASFOR), sent to AGERPRES on Friday.
TREEADS is a large-scale project of the European Union (EU) dedicated to the fight against wildfires and brings together 47 organizations from 13 European countries plus Taiwan.
From Romania, partners in this project are the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests, the Association of Foresters from Romania and the SMURD Foundation.
According to the quoted source, on Friday, the indicator set for this stage in Romania was reached, in the Macin Mountains Natural Park in Tulcea county, the oldest geological formation in the country. The park has been declared a protected area since 2000.
"Its available natural potential makes it accessible to a wide range of tourists, interested in hiking, landscapes, flora, local fauna, studies and documentation. Among the identified vulnerabilities of the area are uncontrolled tourism, poaching, scattered grazing, illegal logging that leads to habitat suppression, vegetation burning, destruction of spontaneous flora, illegal capture of loggerhead turtles, farm expansion, off-road vehicles, ATVs and motorcycles disturbing the tranquility of the area. Because of this abundance of visitors, human negligence is a major factor to be taken into account in the prevention and mitigation of forest fires," the press release reads.
The objectives of the project, in Romania, aim to reduce the incidence of forest fires by 50% by using a proactive preventive approach that uses the latest technology, to reduce by 25% the response time of firefighters in case of fire danger by using AR-VR technology in training exercises, establishing improved fire response procedures and, last but not least, controlling any fire in less than 24 hours.
The TREEADS project is based on state-of-the-art products with mature and proven technologies (high TRL) and the latest innovations in areas covering all three stages of fire management: fire prevention and preparedness, detection and response, restoration and adaptation. All these stages will be found in an ecosystem on a fire management platform.
Funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Program, the project will improve the protection of forests and communities, strengthening the resilience of forests in the Union.
Within this project, which will take place for 42 months, more than 26 different technologies will be optimized, developed and validated, based on a budget of 22.8 million euros.AGERPRES(RO - author: Daniel Badea, editor: Andreea Marinescu; EN - author: Catalin Cristian Trandafir, editor: Simona Iacob)
