Romanian officials react to death of Moldovan composer Eugen Doga

Acting Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu sent a message of condolences on Tuesday to the family of Moldovan composer Eugen Doga, emphasizing that, for Romanians on both banks of the Prut River, the maestro will remain 'a true legend of music.'
'Today we lost Eugen Doga, a genius composer who transposed into music the beauty and soul of his native Moldova and the essence of Romanian spirituality. He offered universal culture the waltz recognized by UNESCO among the musical masterpieces of the 20th century, as well as numerous creations of great value. For Romanians on both banks of the Prut, Eugen Doga remains a true legend of music. Through creations of rare sensitivity and unparalleled artistic refinement, he enriched the cultural heritage and stood out as a prominent contemporary ambassador of Romanian culture in universality. In these moments of pain, we convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved family, loved ones and all those who loved and cherished him! His musical legacy will always remain alive, inspiring entire generations,' Predoiu said, according to a post on the Government's Facebook account.

Eugen Doga was one of the most important creators of his generation, who left behind a vast musical work, the Romanian Ministry of Culture said on Tuesday in a message posted on Facebook.
'The great composer Eugen Doga left us today, at the age of 88. One of the most important creators of his generation, Eugen Doga left behind a vast musical oeuvre, which includes children's songs, symphonies, ballets, romances and film music,' the ministry stressed.
According to him, his musical legacy will endure across generations, as an emblem of Romanian sensitivity and refinement.
Eugen Doga has composed the soundtrack for over 200 films and shows, among the most famous being 'The Fiddlers', 'The Queen of the Gipsies', 'Maria Mirabela', 'My Gentle and Tender Beast', 'Procust's Bed', 'The Birds of Our Youth'. His music has conquered entire generations and has become part of the common Romanian emotional heritage.
Throughout his life, he was awarded numerous prizes and honors, in the Republic of Moldova, Romania and throughout the world. He was a full member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, an honorary member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in Salzburg and an Honorary Doctor of several universities.
