Government: Romania is set to operationalize a deep geological repository for radioactive waste by 2050

Image

On Friday, the government approved a memorandum committing to a schedule of measures to align the country's strategic nuclear projects with European sustainability requirements.

The safe management of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste—including the existence of a deep geological repository for high-level radioactive waste—represents a key element, according to a Government statement.

'Currently, Romania's national strategy targets the year 2055 for the deep geological repository. However, European requirements stipulate that it must be operational by 2050. To close this five-year gap and avoid delays in the assessment of nuclear projects, the Government is committing to a clear schedule of measures enabling Romania to meet the European deadline,' the statement notes.

Compliance with these requirements is important for the continuation and implementation of strategic projects in the nuclear sector, including those developed by Nuclearelectrica, the cited source notes.

'The lack of a commitment and a credible plan for making the geological repository operational by 2050 could lead to delays in the European Commission's evaluation and approval process, potentially affecting the timeline for the implementation and commissioning of nuclear investment projects. Through this memorandum, Romania sends a clear message regarding its commitment to meeting European requirements and taking timely measures for the safe, long-term management of radioactive waste,' the Government states.
