Specialists from the Czech Republic, Israel, Poland, the Republic of Moldova, Sweden, Hungary and Romania will participate, from Sunday to Tuesday, in Alba Iulia, in the international conference "Urban Jewish Cemeteries in Central-Eastern Europe between Early Modern and the Present Times: Research and Valuation."

According to the organisers, the opening ceremony will take place at the Alba Iulia Synagogue on Sunday, while the conference itself will be held at the "1 Decembrie 1918" University on Monday and Tuesday.

"The Department of History, Archaeology and Heritage of the '1 Decembrie 1918' University of Alba Iulia organises from 13 to 15 October 2024, in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Alba Iulia and the National Museum of the Union of Alba Iulia and in partnership with the Department of Judaic Studies of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literature of the University of Bucharest, Department of Jewish Art of the Bar Ilan University of Jerusalem and the Commission of the Romanian Academy of History of the Cities of Romania, the international conference entitled 'Urban Jewish Cemeteries in Central-Eastern Europe between Early Modern and the Present Times: Research and Valuation'," the organisers said in a release sent to AGERPRES.

The event, funded by the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania, Alba County Council and the "1 Decembrie 1918" University, is organised on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the research and restoration project of the Jewish cemetery in Alba Iulia.

"It brings together specialists (teaching staff, researchers and restorers) from Romania, the Republic of Moldova and other European countries (Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, Israel, Sweden), some of them authors of remarkable works on the subject (Rudolf Klein, for the Central European area, or Ilia Rodov, for the whole of Central-Eastern Europe) or involved in promoting Jewish heritage (Ruth Ellen Gruber, editor of the website 'Jewish Heritage Europe')," the press release reads.

The Jewish cemetery in Alba Iulia is the oldest and largest of its kind in Transylvania. It is also the oldest community in Transylvania, dating back to the beginning of the 17th century, when, in 1623, Prince Gabriel Bethlen granted a privilege inviting Jews from the south of the Danube, from the Ottoman Empire, to come and settle in Transylvania.

Alba Iulia was the only city in Transylvania where Jews were legally allowed to settle until 1848. AGERPRES (RO - author: Marinela Brumar, editor: Georgiana Tanasescu; EN - editor: Adina Panaitescu)
