Social Democrat ministers resign; PSD: PM no longer has parliamentary majority support
The Social Democratic Party (PSD) ministers submitted their resignations on Thursday at the Victoria Palace.
Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacsu, Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan, Labour Minister Florin Manole, Justice Minister Radu Marinescu, Health Minister Alexandru Rogobete and Transport Minister Ciprian Serban have thus withdrawn from the Cabinet led by Liberal Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
In a press release, the PSD said the ministers' resignations represent the political act formalizing the party's decision to withdraw support for Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
'From this moment, the prime minister no longer has the support of a parliamentary majority, which means he no longer has the democratic legitimacy to exercise the leadership of the Government of Romania. According to the Constitution, no group and no person can exercise national sovereignty in their own name, contrary to the parliamentary majority will resulting from free and democratic elections. Furthermore, maintaining a non-functional Government, lacking a parliamentary majority, is a deeply irresponsible approach, with negative implications for the national economy,' according to a PSD release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.
Previously, Government Spokesperson Ioana Dogioiu mentioned after the Executive meeting that Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan thanked the PSD ministers for their cooperation, noting they were not present at the meeting, in particular Deputy Prime Minister Marian Neacsu and called for staff in ministries to be retained or dismissed strictly on competence and not political criteria.
The legal procedure stipulates that, after the resignations are submitted and registered with the Prime Minister's Chancellery, together with proposals for interim appointments, they will be sent to the Cotroceni Palace for the issuance of decrees of dismissal and appointment to office.
