Siemens to build new low-voltage electrical equipment factory in Sibiu
Siemens will build a new factory in Sibiu for the production of low-voltage electrical equipment from the Sentron range, with the investment, estimated at several tens of millions of euros, set to be completed by 2028 and to include automated processes based on artificial intelligence, robotics and digital technologies, the company announced on Thursday in a press release.
'Siemens plans to construct a new digital factory from scratch in the western industrial area of Sibiu. The planned investment, worth several tens of millions of euros, targets a distinct Siemens business unit with a specific product portfolio and its own operational footprint, and is not related to other manufacturing activities. This investment reflects a long-term industrial strategy aimed at specific market segments,' says the press release.
According to the company, construction is scheduled to begin in August 2026 and is expected to be completed by 2028, subject to all necessary permits and approvals.
'The new facility will cover approximately 14,500 square metres and will be developed in partnership with WDP under a long-term lease agreement, in full compliance with local laws and regulations,' reads the cited source.
The planned Sibiu factory is designed as a data-driven production environment built on Siemens' own technologies and solutions.
'Prior to construction, the production area will be virtually designed using Siemens Digital Twin technology, enabling precise simulation and optimisation of equipment layouts, workflows and production processes to determine the most efficient configuration. The portfolio to be produced at the new facility will include the Sentron range of low-voltage products, intended for protection, switching, measurement and monitoring - such as miniature circuit breakers, residual current devices, residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection and electronic circuit protection devices - for industrial and residential use,' the company informs.
Siemens also plans highly flexible and intelligent production, with artificial intelligence playing an increasingly important role. The focus will be on seamless data integration and smart control, from raw material supply through assembly and testing to final delivery.
'Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) will transport materials to production lines fully autonomously. The integration of automation and robotics is also part of the strategy. In addition to increased efficiency, Siemens expects enhanced flexibility, enabling rapid responses to changing conditions and future customer requirements,' further shoes the release.
Sustainability is set to be a central element in both the construction and operation of the factory. The facility is designed to operate on a carbon-neutral basis, with energy efficiency embedded across all manufacturing processes.
'Skylights equipped with tubular daylighting devices are expected to be installed to channel natural sunlight directly into the production area through highly reflective tubes, reducing reliance on artificial lighting. After completion, a rooftop photovoltaic system is planned, with the solar energy generated on site used directly, while the remaining electricity will be sourced from sustainable suppliers,' the company says.
The factory is also conceived as an ergonomic, digitally connected workspace designed to support collaboration and continuous learning.
'Dedicated training spaces will be provided to help employees develop skills in automation, data analysis and ongoing professional development. Modern offices and shared areas are also designed to ensure full accessibility, including for people with disabilities or reduced mobility,' company representatives added.
