INS: Romania's natural population increase remains negative in June
Romania's population recorded a natural decrease of 7,247 people in June this year, with the number of deaths recorded being 1.6 times higher than the number of live births, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Monday.
According to official statistics, birth certificates were registered for 11,792 children in June 2026, up by 1,348 (+12.9%) compared with May 2026.
The number of death certificates registered in June was 19,039 (10,032 for males and 9,007 for females), 214 more deaths than in May 2026, representing an increase of 1.1% (+3.1% for males and -0.9% for females). The number of death certificates registered for children under one year of age in June was 39, down by 12 from May 2026.
In June, 41.4% (7,873 deaths) of the total number of deaths were recorded among people aged 80 and over, 28.3% (5,384 deaths) among people aged 70-79 and 15.6%, representing 2,962 deaths, among people aged 60-69. At the other end of the scale, the fewest deaths were recorded among the 0-4 age group (50 deaths), 5-19 age group (63 deaths) and 20-29 age group (71 deaths).
Official statistics also show that 8,777 marriages were registered at Register Offices in June. The number of divorces granted by final court rulings and by mutual consent (through administrative or notarial proceedings) was 2,374 in June this year.
At the same time, the number of birth certificates registered for live births in June 2026 was 950 (-7.5%) lower than in the same month of 2025.
The number of death certificates registered in June 2026 increased by 293 (+1.6%) compared with the same month last year, while the number registered for children under one who died was 21 lower in June 2026 than in the same month of 2025.
The natural increase was negative both in June 2026 (-7,247 people) and in June 2025 (-6,004 people).
According to the INS, in June 2026, the deaths of 9,644 persons were recorded in urban areas (5,010 males and 4,634 females), while 9,395 deaths were recorded in rural areas (5,022 males and 4,373 females). Compared with the same month of 2025, the number of recorded deaths increased by 4.7% in urban areas (+7.5% for males and +1.9% for females) and decreased by 1.5% in rural areas (+0.1% for males and -3.3% for females).
