International Meridian Festival to take place Nov. 2 - 8, with ICR as partner
The International Meridian Festival will take place Nov. 2-8 in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara and Iasi, with the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) partnering the event.
Now in its 21st edition, titled Sonimagicon, the festival continues its exploration of the relationship between sound and image, bringing together music, video art, instrumental theatre, mono-opera, soundscapes, dance, performance art and electronic creations, the ICR press office said on Wednesday.
A longstanding partner of the festival, the Romanian Cultural Institute will offer Bucharest audiences the concert-event Sonorama, a sonic panorama of Romanian music, scheduled for Nov. 7 at 5:00 p.m. in the George Enescu Hall of the National University of Music Bucharest. Admission is free.
Built around the concept of the Meridian - Sonimagicon festival, the concert will open with an instrumental theatre piece conceived by composer Adrian Iorgulescu, The Singing Lesson for voice and piano. Written during the pandemic, the work will be performed before an audience for the first time. The programme will then focus on the interaction between acoustic instruments and electronic media.
The concert will also feature several world premieres, including Danaida by Ulpiu Vlad, Piano Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Electroacoustic Medium - Under Cover by Maia Ciobanu and The Memory of Sound by Roman Vlad. The programme will include a work by prominent Romanian diaspora composer Corneliu Dan Georgescu, Whati Wayata. A Pentatonic Wandering, as well as Centrifuga, considered one of the masterpieces of Romanian contemporary music by the late Octavian Nemescu.
The performers include pianists Adriana Toacsen, Alexandru Petrovici and Sarah Nidelcu, mezzo-soprano Oana Andra and German clarinetist Thorsten Gubatz, a noted promoter of Romanian music online who recently received a distinction from the Union of Romanian Composers and Musicologists (UCMR) for his efforts.
The festival programme also includes multimedia concerts, instrumental and vocal recitals, and experimental performances staged between Nov. 2 and 8 in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara and Iasi. The events bring together artists and ensembles exploring the fusion of music, technology and visual arts.
