DefMin Oprea: Security of the Republic of Moldova also means security of Romania
Romania's Minister of National Defence, Radu Oprea, said on Monday that the security of the Republic of Moldova is closely linked to that of Romania, stressing the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the field of defence, particularly in terms of intelligence sharing.
'The security of the Republic of Moldova also means the security of Romania. Together, Mr Minister [Anatolie Nosatii, his Moldovan counterpart - editor's note]), we must work and cooperate on all fronts - from sharing information and developing our capacity to operate jointly to monitoring the almost daily threat posed by drones. Both the Republic of Moldova and Romania are facing this situation. The Black Sea is turbulent these days, which is why cooperation between us is becoming extremely important in all these areas, including information sharing and joint action,' Radu Oprea said at the ceremony for the signing of documents under which the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Moldova becomes a partner in the SAFE project - ‘Multi-purpose Wheeled Transport Platforms'.
The minister also highlighted the importance of Romania's participation in the project, which marks a first in terms of coordinating joint procurement under the SAFE programme, in partnership with the Republic of Moldova.
'A total of 2,909 platforms are included in the army's equipment programme. There will also be 62 platforms for the Republic of Moldova. This means cooperation, interoperability and the ability to achieve much better logistical integration. These developments are beneficial for the security of the Republic of Moldova and for Romania's security,' the Defence Minister said.
Another aspect highlighted by Radu Oprea was the development of Romania's defence industry and the possibility of supplying products manufactured domestically to foreign partners as well.
'There is an IVECO factory in Dambovita, and I can also see the president of the Dambovita County Council, Mr Corneliu Stefan. The fact that we have invested and developed production capacities in Romania shows that we can now also become exporters of security, exporting equipment that is competitive,' Oprea pointed out.
