USR Congress adopts resolution pledging action, outlining party's priorities in opposition
The Save Romania Union (USR) Congress, held on Saturday in Timisoara, adopted a resolution entitled 'We Get Things Done. We Keep Our Word', reviewing the achievements of the party's ministers and setting out its principles while in opposition and its priorities for a future term in government.
'The number of forestry directorates was reduced from 41 to 19, while illegal logging is now monitored by satellite. At the Defence Ministry, 238 inspections uncovered irregularities worth RON 800 million, while Romania secured more than EUR 16 billion through SAFE, the second-largest allocation in the EU. Professional selection procedures were launched at 23 state-owned companies, five defence factories resumed operations, and a planned increase in metro fares was blocked,' the resolution states, according to a party press release.
According to the document, USR aims to form a government without the Social Democratic Party (PSD) or the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), working alongside citizens, mayors and reformist political forces, with the National Liberal Party (PNL) as an equal partner. While in opposition, USR pledges to put forward an alternative proposal for every harmful piece of legislation introduced by PSD and to firmly oppose any tax increases.
The party's priorities include reducing the budget deficit 'without placing the burden on workers and pensioners', cutting state privileges, eliminating statutes of limitations as a means of escaping accountability, ensuring effective parliamentary oversight of intelligence services, strengthening anti-drone defences along Romania's eastern border, supporting Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, and implementing administrative reform, including restoring the two-round system for mayoral elections.
'The next elections will be won by a reformist majority. And a reformist majority needs an engine. We can be that engine. Not the trailer. Not the spare wheel. The engine. We get things done. We keep our word. And starting tomorrow, we will focus on just one thing: victory,' the USR Chairman said. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Popescu; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
