Constitutional Court to host meeting of Bureau of Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts next week

The Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) will host a meeting of the Bureau of the Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts (ACCF), as well as a working session themed 'The Information Society and Constitutional Democracy' next Friday.

According to a press release issued by the Constitutional Court of Romania to AGERPRES on Friday, the Court is currently holding the presidency of the ACCF for a three-year term (2025-2028). It is the third constitutional jurisdiction in Europe to hold this position, following those of France (1997-2000) and Switzerland (2015-2019). In 2027, under the CCR's presidency, the ACCF will mark the 30th anniversary of its founding.

'The two events will take place at the Palace of the Parliament, in the Human Rights Hall, and will bring together high-level representatives from the constitutional jurisdictions of 10 countries, alongside the Constitutional Court of Romania, providing a framework for international institutional dialogue and cooperation,' the statement notes.

President Nicusor Dan has been invited to attend the working session, the source adds.

The release further indicates that the Bureau's proceedings will involve representatives from the constitutional jurisdictions of Romania, Benin, Gabon, Albania, Belgium, Cambodia, Mauritania, France, and Senegal, as well as a representative from the ACCF General Secretariat. The working meeting will also involve the participation of representatives from the Constitutional Court of Austria and the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Moldova, alongside the justices of the Constitutional Court of Romania.

The theme of the working meeting, 'The Information Society and Constitutional Democracy,' addresses the increasingly significant role of information and technology across all spheres of human life, as well as the profound transformations within the information society that also impact the mechanisms of constitutional democracy, the Constitutional Court of Romania reports.

The Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts (ACCF), founded in 1997, has consistently promoted institutional dialogue regarding the development of constitutional justice, the strengthening of democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. It has achieved this by fostering relations among members within the Francophone sphere, both through its own events and by collaborating with various international forums and organizations.

The Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts brings together 50 constitutional courts and equivalent institutions (comprising 47 members and 3 observers) from Africa, Europe, the Americas, and Asia. Established in 1997 at the initiative of the French Constitutional Council under the name 'Association of Constitutional Courts Using the French Language' (ACCPUF), the organization became the Association of Francophone Constitutional Courts (ACCF) in 2019.

In May 2025, the Constitutional Court of Romania was selected by the member jurisdictions, convened in a general assembly, to hold the 10th presidency of the ACCF. The Constitutional Court of Romania became a full member of the ACCPUF in 1998 and it has been a member of the ACCF Bureau since 2022 and served as vice-president from 2022 to 2025.
