Energy Ministry: Iernut thermal power plant expected to begin commercial operation by end-H1 2027
The Iernut thermal power plant is expected to begin commercial operations by the end of the first half of 2027 at the latest, while its synchronisation with the National Power System (SEN) is scheduled for the first quarter of next year, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Energy.
The announcement follows a working visit to the plant by Energy Minister Dumitru Chisalita earlier in the day. During the visit to the facility, considered a strategic asset for Romania's energy security, officials reviewed the progress of the investment project and the steps required to complete and commission the new electricity generation capacity being developed by national natural gas producer Romgaz S.A.
'The development of the Iernut thermal power plant, through the construction of a new 430 MW combined-cycle gas turbine power plant, is one of Romgaz's strategic investments in electricity generation. During the discussions, Romgaz management and technical representatives presented the current status of the project, progress in contracting and carrying out works, with Romgaz acting as general contractor, and the main objectives for the coming period. Following the presentation of Romgaz's activities as general contractor, the status of contracts signed and currently being implemented, and the progress made by General Electric on site, there are solid grounds to expect the Iernut thermal power plant to enter commercial operation by the end of the first half of 2027. This outlook is supported by the work currently under way and planned for the coming period to prepare for testing ahead of the plant's synchronisation with the National Power System, which is expected to take place by the end of the first quarter of 2027 at the latest,' the statement said.
According to the Ministry, completing the Iernut investment will strengthen national energy security, diversify electricity generation capacity and increase the flexibility of the National Power System by adding a modern, efficient power generation facility.
The new Iernut thermal power plant has an installed capacity of 430 MW and uses modern combined-cycle gas turbine technology, which generates electricity efficiently from natural gas. Its gross electrical efficiency is 56.4%.
The plant is also equipped with a 'black start' system, allowing it to restart without an initial power supply from the external electricity grid. This capability is essential for helping restore the National Power System in the event of major failures or widespread blackouts.
The Energy Ministry also stressed that the plant's strategic location in central Romania will help support electricity supply and reduce the risk of congestion in the transmission network. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniel Badea; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
