Romania fully respects the sovereignty and the right of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to democratically decide their future, the Romanian Embassy in Chisinau stated. The message was conveyed in the context of recent statements made by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Chisinau regarding language and religion in Moldova.
'The Republic of Moldova and Romania share a well-documented history, a common language, and a well-known cultural and spiritual heritage. These realities are enshrined in both historical and linguistic research and the constitutional and legislative framework of the Republic of Moldova,' the Romanian diplomatic mission states.
At the same time, the embassy emphasizes that 'any statements that relativize or call into question these realities are regrettable and lack a factual basis. Moreover, they risk giving rise to interpretations that serve neither the dialogue between partners nor the common interest of strengthening trust and cohesion in the region.'
Furthermore, the embassy emphasizes that, in the current regional context—marked by sustained disinformation campaigns, attempts to rewrite history, and repeated efforts to instrumentalize identity-related issues—'any message that could create ambiguity regarding language, identity, or shared cultural heritage risks being exploited by hostile actors, such as the Russian Federation, which seek to undermine the Republic of Moldova's democratic resilience and European path.'
The Embassy adds that respect for historical truth, scientific rigor, and the constitutional framework of the Republic of Moldova constitutes an essential prerequisite for a responsible public dialogue.
'The relationship between Romania and the Republic of Moldova is underpinned by a shared language, culture, and history, and Romania will continue to support the Republic of Moldova in the spirit of a privileged partnership, based on mutual respect, European values, and a dialogue grounded in responsibility and trust,' the Romanian diplomatic mission stated.
