Consultations at Cotroceni/Simion: AUR will vote only for AUR-proposed PM and a Cabinet including the party
AUR chairman George Simion declares that the party's parliamentarians will only support a prime minister proposed by the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians and a government of which his party is a part.
'AUR can only vote for a prime minister proposed by AUR and a government of which it is part. Otherwise, our solution is to return to the will of the people. Today Nicusor Dan was very hasty and we are glad about this. He did not make any assessments. And I am glad that there are no more derogatory comments about us,' said Simion during a press conference held after the consultations at Cotroceni Palace.
On the other hand, the AUR leader emphasized that he does not rule out any option, because he wants to be part of the solution, not part of the problem.
George Simion stated that Ilie Bolojan 'no longer has to play the role of prime minister' after he was dismissed on May 5.
'All the cards are on the table and all the proposals are on the table. I know my role, my place in this formation. We were the second party in the country. Of course I told them that we wanted a GOLD nomination. We are the second party. Normally, constitutionally, the first time they have to go through the first phase, through the first party in the country, which again starts with a rhetoric of 'this way, that way, that way'. It will be very difficult to form a majority. There are no minority governments. There are only governments supported by a parliamentary majority, and our desire is for this parliamentary majority to be reflected in the future government formula. Because if you don't have political support and you don't have political representatives in a political government with a majority vote in Parliament, we will end up in the same situation in two or three months,' he said.
Simion rejected the statements of deputy George Becali, according to which AUR would have initially accepted to support the Vestea Government.
'Mr. Becali does not always tell the truth. Or at least this is not the truth. It is not true that we promised Nicusor Dan that we would vote for this government. There was no such possibility. Maybe Mr. Becali was misinformed by Mr. Grindeanu,' he said.
According to the AUR leader, the hearings of the proposed ministers must be long enough so that parliamentarians can ask questions within the specialized committees.
'You saw some samples yesterday. I can't imagine how some people thought we could vote for something like that,' he added.
George Simon mentioned that in the May 2025 elections, Romanian society was 'artificially divided' between pro-Europeans and anti-Europeans.
'I would not have taken the country out of either the EU or NATO. It's just that there is a difference of opinion and I certainly would not have given Romanians' money, especially in the current crisis, to Ukraine,' he specified.
