Cotroceni consultations/ UDMR's Kelemen Hunor: Two variants for a minority government on the table
Leader of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Tuesday, after consultations with President Nicusor Dan, that three governing options remain on the table - two minority formulas and a third involving a 'very slim' majority.
He said UDMR presented three variants, noting that reviving the former government coalition was no longer realistic. The first option is a PNL-USR-UDMR minority government, transparently supported by PSD, though PSD Chairman Sorin Grindeanu has already ruled this out. The second is a PSD single-party minority government, backed in Parliament by PNL, UDMR and the minorities group - including the PNL MPs who supported the Vestea Cabinet, because 'otherwise the numbers don't add up'.
A third option would be a government with a very narrow majority, essentially restoring the coalition that functioned until June 2025 - made up of PSD, PNL, UDMR and the minorities group - which, he argued, would offer greater stability and allow the government to implement its agenda, including the 2027 budget.
Kelemen emphasized that any of these options must begin with a political agreement among parliamentary parties before nominating a prime minister.
He warned that naming a candidate first alters the negotiation dynamics: the parties must reach an understanding before discussing parliamentary support. With a political agreement in place, he said, the procedure could be completed quickly, 'by early next week, before the end of June'. UDMR is now awaiting the president's decision on whether he will make a nomination immediately or allow more time for parties to reach an understanding, Kelemen Hunor said.
