OECD's Cormann plans to extend invitation for Romania to join OECD in June
The invitation for Romania to join the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) could be extended this summer, OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann said on Monday after leading a delegation of the organisation that was welcomed by President Nicusor Dan at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
Cormann said that his intention was to send the invitation for Romania to join the OECD in June, before the Council meeting, during the final months of the accession process. He added that the delegation was in Bucharest to launch the Economic Survey for Romania and mentioned that, over recent decades, Romania had recorded strong growth and had achieved very good results in converging with OECD standards on income and living standards.

President Nicusor Dan said he was pleased that the targets set had been achieved and thanked the organisation for the survey.
The head of state subsequently conveyed said that Romania's accession this year to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development was a strategic objective that had been politically assumed by a broad majority through the substantial reforms already adopted.
'Our country is at an advanced stage of the process of becoming a member of the organisation and, in this context, I welcomed today OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann at Cotroceni Palace, on the occasion of the launch of the 2026 Economic Survey for Romania. This survey is relevant through its comprehensive analysis of the directions for the development of the national economy. I thanked Secretary-General Cormann for the support provided to our country in obtaining the OECD membership, and the visit to Bucharest reconfirms the Secretary-General's firm support,' Nicusor Dan wrote on Facebook.
According to the president, membership in the organisation that brings together the world's most developed economies would represent major progress for Romania, as it would help attract foreign investment, secure more favourable financing on international markets, modernise public administration and support the development of policies based on reliable data.
