Films by Romanian directors Giurgiu, Stefanescu, to run in international festivals in Thessaloniki, Sofia
Three recent Romanian films, 'The Spruce Forest' directed by Tudor Giurgiu, 'A Safe Place' directed by Cecilia Stefanescu and '3 Days in September' directed by Tudor Giurgiu, have been included in the selection of the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival and the Sofia International Film Festival, according to Transilvania Film.
'The Spruce Forest', directed by Tudor Giurgiu, was selected for the Open Horizons section of the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival, 28th edition, one of the most important documentary film festivals in South-Eastern Europe, organised annually in Greece and recognised for its selection of internationally relevant documentary productions.
It will have two screenings at the festival.
The film recreates a moment of April 1, 1941, when a Romanian community in Northern Bukovina was massacred at Fantana Alba by the Soviets. Fictionalising the stories of the survivors, the film brings back to the big screen two of the most valuable Romanian actors - Coca Bloos and Mircea Andreescu - in an impressive tête-à-tête. Writing is by Tudor Giurgiu and Gabriel Gheorghe.
Another Romanian film is the feature film 'A Safe Place', directed by Cecilia Stefanescu, selected for the debut category at the Sofia International Film Festival, the most famous film festival in Bulgaria, which takes place this year between March 13 and 31. The selection marks a new stage in the film's journey, following the international premiere in the First Feature section of the 29th edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (POFF), one of the most important film festivals in Northern Europe.
The film focuses on Lucia (Marina Palii), a woman caught between the roles of wife and mother and the need for personal freedom. A holiday on the Bulgarian seaside becomes the space of an emotional confrontation that brings out tensions, frustrations and imbalances in the couple's life.
The cast includes Marina Palii, Virgil Aioanei, Bianca Cuculici, Rolando Matsangos and Emil Măndănac.
The Sofia International Film Festival program also includes the most recent feature film by Tudor Giurgiu, '3 Days in September'. It will be presented in the competition of films made in the Balkans, after a world premiere in February, at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
The film follows the emotional journey of a woman on her wedding day, which turns into a liberating night in a seaside resort.
The cast includes Andreea Vasile, Emilian Oprea, Emilia Popescu, Adela Popescu, Mirela Zeța and Conrad Mericoffer. Writing is by Tudor Giurgiu, Conrad Mericoffer and Radu Grigore.
'A Safe Place' will come to Romanian cinemas on March 13, while '3 Days in September' is scheduled for release on September 18. AGERPRES (RO - editing by: Petroniu Craiu; EN- writing by: Corneliu-Aurelian Colceriu)
