Middle East Crisis/ Ambassador Mihalache: No reason for Cyprus's population to be a target of attacks
There is no reason for Cyprus's population to become a target of attacks amid the Middle East conflict, Romania's ambassador to Nicosia, Dan Mihalache, said on Tuesday.
'There is a lot of tension and debate these days regarding the war and Cyprus. I urge everyone to remain calm. There are no reasons for fear, nor any indication that the civilian population on the island would become a target of attacks. Of course, any war carries a degree of unpredictability, but it also has a psychological component - that of creating panic, fear and anxiety,' the diplomat said.
He called on Romanians to stay in contact with diplomatic missions.
'I assure you that the Romanian state is monitoring these developments and that matters concerning the Romanian community or Romanian citizens on the island will remain under control. Please follow our official updates and stay in touch with the Consulate. Should there be any notable developments, we will act accordingly. The most important thing is to remain calm and level-headed,' Mihalache added.
Due to the war in Iran, the European Union has postponed another ministerial meeting scheduled to take place in Cyprus, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU, German news agency dpa reported on Tuesday.
Consequently, the EU culture ministers will no longer meet on Thursday and Friday in the eastern Mediterranean island state as initially planned, the Cypriot EU Council presidency announced Monday evening. Another ministerial meeting scheduled for earlier in the week had already been canceled.
The decisions were based on the security situation and potential air traffic disruptions in the region resulting from the war in Iran.
The British air base at Akrotiri in Cyprus was targeted late on Sunday by an Iranian Shahed-type drone. Two additional drones were intercepted on Monday afternoon, according to government reports.
There were initially no confirmed findings regarding the motivation or identity of those responsible for the drone attack, although a link to the war in Iran is considered highly likely. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Ghita; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
