Targu Jiu park hosting works by Constantin Brancusi to be rehabilitated under the Regional Operational Programme

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

The Central Park in the municipality of Targu Jiu, which houses some of Constantin Brancusi's works, will be refurbished under a non-repayable funding project worth over 20 million euros, with works scheduled to be completed next year.

'It is a project financed through the Regional Operational Programme. In fact, this major project - the rehabilitation of the Central Park - consists of three projects: the northern part of the Central Park, also known as the Public Garden, the southern part of the Public Garden, and the Alley of Chairs. Considering that 2026 is a special year, the Year of Constantin Brancusi, we launched and finalised the tender procedures for the two lateral sections, but not yet for the Alley of Chairs. By the end of this year, we expect to issue the order to start works for the Alley of Chairs as well, which is a lower-value project and can be completed within a shorter timeframe. We have already issued the order to begin works in the northern area of the Central Park, and we will issue the order for the southern section shortly. We believe that by 2027 - that is, in a year and a half - the Central Park, which houses part of Constantin Brancusi's works, will become a public garden worthy of Constantin Brancusi and the works he left to Targu Jiu,' Targu Jiu Mayor Marcel Romanescu told AGERPRES on Monday.

The project includes landscaping green areas, installing irrigation systems, replanting trees and removing hazardous ones, refurbishing the pathways, installing new public lighting throughout the Central Park, and upgrading the Alley of Chairs.

'It will be a complete rehabilitation of the Central Park because, beyond its importance, we also want to enhance its usability, so that visitors, residents of Targu Jiu, and tourists alike can spend an enjoyable time here. At present, as it has been since the Brancusi works were installed, the park resembles a forest where, apart from the paths crossing the park, the green areas are not really usable,' the mayor added.

The park will be closed during the rehabilitation period, with the exception, for this year, of the Alley of Chairs. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Popescu; EN - writing by: Cristina Zaharia)
