Abrudean: Technical recession, temporary issue, collateral to reforms, which will be overcome
Senate Chairman Mircea Abrudean said on Monday that the technical recession is a 'temporary' issue, 'collateral to the reforms that have been carried out so far', which will be overcome, adding that in 2024 there was also a technical recession and 'there was not so much fuss.'
'The current governing coalition has Ilie Bolojan as prime minister, that was the protocol of this coalition, that was voted in the Romanian Parliament. Now we are all in a hurry to make statements about the technical recession. Let me remind you that we had a technical recession in 2024 as well, it wasn't so much fuss then, as far as I remember,' Abrudean said.
He added that the technical recession will be overcome, and Romania's rating has been affirmed.
'I believe that the technical recession, as explained by the prime minister and the Ministry of Finance, is a collateral issue to the reforms that have been carried out so far, to the measures that have been taken so far. It is a temporary matter that will be overcome. The important thing is to look a little at the rating agencies and we have Fitch that kept our rating, bad as it was, but it affirmed it, so it didn't downgrade, with all the technical recession that I see a lot of people talk about a lot in this period. Romania's economy grew by 0.6% in 2025, but ended the year in technical recession, after the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) shrank by 1.9% in the fourth quarter from the third quarter of 2025, this being the second consecutive quarter of decline, according to flash data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Friday that the temporary technical recession is part of the anticipated cost of the transition to a solid economy.
