Romania wins four gold medals at 2025 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics
Romania won four gold medals at the 2025 International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA - senior category), the Ministry of Education and Research announced on Thursday.
The medal-winning students are:
Mendel Emanuel Mendelsohn - 12th grade, International Computer Science High School of Bucharest
Teodor Bichir - 11th grade, International Computer Science High School of Bucharest
Bogdan Rusea - 11th grade, 'Emil Racovita' National College, Cluj-Napoca
Vlad Bolohan - 10th grade, International Computer Science High School of Bucharest
Also part of the team was: David Palaghianu - 10th grade, 'Stefan cel Mare' National College, Suceava
The competition took place from 11 to 21 August in Mumbai, India, with 64 participating countries from around the world. It included five rounds: theoretical, practical (telescope observations), planetarium round, sky map (blank map) round, and data analysis, according to a Facebook post by the Ministry of Education.
According to the same source, the preparation and selection of the teams took place in Suceava, coordinated by 'Stefan cel Mare' University of Suceava, Suceava County School Inspectorate, and the CYGNUS Scientific Society, in partnership with the Sports Programme High School in Suceava.
The organisational coordination on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Research was ensured by Professor Elisabeta Ana Naghi, while the scientific coordination was provided by Professor Petru Craciun from the Suceava County School Inspectorate and Professor Cristian Pîrghie from 'Stefan cel Mare' University of Suceava.
