Romania hands over SEDM Secretariat to Greece
Romania has handed over the Secretariat of the South-Eastern Europe Defence Ministerial Process (SEDM) to Greece, thus concluding its mandate held during the 2023-2025 period, the Ministry of National Defence (MApN) announced on Friday.
In Athens, the Romanian delegation, led by the rotating chair Simona Cojocaru, Director of the Defence Policy Directorate, held bilateral discussions with the Greek delegation led by the new SEDM Chair, Ambassador Eleftherios Angelopoulos. During these talks, the achievements of Romania's mandate within the initiative were presented, as well as lessons learned over the two-year period, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES.
According to the source, the main accomplishments of Romania's SEDM Presidency include: The approval by SEDM Defence Ministers of the concept to strengthen the South-Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG), the operational arm of the initiative; The endorsement of a new resilience project led by Romania; The admission of the Republic of Moldova as a full member of the SEDM; Increased engagement with international organisations, particularly the United Nations (UN).
'The handover of the SEDM Secretariat represents a first step in the process of transferring SEDM command to the Hellenic Republic. The official ceremony will take place in September 2025 in Kumanovo, Republic of North Macedonia, coinciding with the celebration of 26 years since the establishment of SEEBRIG,' the Ministry said.
Initially created in 1996 as a platform for cooperation among South-Eastern European countries aspiring to Euro-Atlantic integration, the SEDM Process has evolved into a key regional initiative addressing real security challenges while promoting trust and cooperation in the region.
