Romanian Amalia Covaliu wins gold in women's sabre at World Cadet Fencing Championships in China

Romanian athlete Amalia Covaliu won the gold medal in the women's sabre event, on Tuesday, at the World Cadet Fencing Championships in Wuxi (China), after defeating China's Qimiao Pan, 15-14, in the final.

Amalia Covaliu did not compete in the first round, and in the second round she defeated compatriot Amelie Pescaru, 15-7, in the third round she won against South Korean sabre Dahui Moon, 15-5, in the round of 16 she won by a narrow margin against Hungary's Boglarka Komjathy, 15-14, in the quarterfinals she defeated American Brynnley McKee, 15-5, and in the semifinals she won against China's Xuanyi Zhang, 15-12.

The bronze medals went to Zhang of China and Eunchae Jang of South Korea.

On Monday, Amalia Covaliu finished 10th in the junior sabre event, and her older brother, Vlad Covaliu, won the silver medal in the junior sabre.

In the cadet sabre event, Romanian Michael Ene finished 5th, after losing in the quarterfinals to Russia's Iaroslav Borisov 8-15. Radu Matei finished 20th, and Rares Munteanu finished 97th.

The world title went to American Emilio Paturzo Gonzalez, silver went to Turkey's Candeniz Berrak, and bronze medals were won by Russia's Iaroslav Borisov and Italy's Leonardo Reale.
