Tall ship Mircea departs for New York for United States' 250th anniversary events
Romania's tall training ship, the three-masted barque Mircea, set sail on Thursday from the Port of Constanta to join the international maritime gathering in New York Harbor that will mark the celebration of America's 250th anniversary.
'As the United States prepares to celebrate 250 years since its founding, New York Harbor will host a major gathering of tall ships, the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world. Romania's training ship Mircea set sail from Constanta to join the international fleet in New York Harbor to mark the occasion with a salute to the Statue of Liberty,' a statement from the US Embassy informs.
The U.S. Embassy's Naval Attaché, Commander Justin Dargan attended a ceremony in Constanta marking the departure of Mircea on its international training voyage. Scheduled to take place from April 16 to September 16, the voyage will include stops in five U.S. ports: Miami, Norfolk, Baltimore, New York, and Boston.
'As America prepares to commemorate its 250th birthday, we look forward to welcoming tall ship Mircea and her crew to the United States for this historic celebration. The participation of Romania in Freedom 250 highlights the enduring strength of our partnership and of our shared maritime heritage, as allied nations come together to honor our commitment to freedom and democracy,' said U.S. Ambassador to Romania Darryl Nirenberg, as quoted in the statement.
Mircea tall ship is scheduled to arrive in New York on Independence Day, where it will remain docked for four days before continuing on to its final stop, the port of Boston. Prior to arriving in New York, the ship will reach the American mainland at the Port of Miami on June 13 and will spend over a week calling at the ports of Miami, Norfolk, and Baltimore. The ship will depart the U.S. coast on July 16, 2026.
A three-masted barque measuring approximately 82 meters in length, Mircea is homeported in Constanta on the Black Sea. The ship carries 23 sails with a total sail area of 1,750 square meters and has a complement of 80 - 89 crew members and 120 - 140 cadets. Built in 1938 in Hamburg, Germany, for the Romanian Navy, Mircea is a sister ship to Eagle (United States), Gorch Fock (Germany), and Sagres (Portugal). It regularly participates in international tall ship events, including previous OpSail celebrations in New York.
