Traditional recipes from Saschiz, including Grief Hanklich, published in Milk Street Magazine

Image

Bucharest, Jan 28 /Agerpres/ - The recipe of a traditional dessert from the Tarnavelor Region, the Grief Hanklich, was featured in the famous Milk Street Magazine, in the January-February issue, after its founder, Christopher Kimball, personally tasted the dessert prepared by Ibolyka Macarov, a core member of the Women's Neighborhood of Saschiz.

'Christopher Kimball was here together with Irina Georgescu, who is a seasoned food writer and food blogger. She is of Romanian origin but lives in England. The recommendation also came from the executive president of the ADEPT Foundation, Cristi Gherghiceanu. I made not only hanklich - I see that they have now put the hanklich in the magazine - but also an old recipe of bean soup with dried plums, which they loved. They filmed, I understand they were filming for a cooking show. They filmed the part where I made the soup and the part where I made the hanklich, and then everybody ate. They asked me a lot of questions about my cooking, where my passion for cooking comes from, inspiration, how I cook and much, much more. We also talked about the Women's Neighborhood of Saschiz, how we are organized now, I showed them the recipe book and talked about the food we cook and where the recipes come from,' Ibolyka Macarov told the press on Tuesday.

The housewife said that the feedback from the Milk Street Magazine team has been great, both for the hanklich she cooked and the bean soup she served them.

'Shortly after they left here, they sent me some photos and thanks for the food, which I was delighted with. I received feedback and thanks for the bean soup, which they told me was the best they had eaten in Transylvania. I don't know if it's really like that or not, because I am convinced that here in Transylvania, everybody makes very good bean soup. But the hanklich delighted them! That was the reaction of the whole team, not just Christopher Kimball, but the whole team. By the time I made it, they were very curious, very interested in how I was going to put everything together. While it was in the oven, they said it smelled amazing, when I took it out of the oven, they were actually mesmerized. They said it was an extraordinary sweet, they never imagined that something so good could come out,' said Ibolyka Macarov.

According to the housewife, the hanklich has different variants, different recipes in the Tarnavelor area and each family that prepares it can have its own recipe.

'In every locality they have different recipes. Here, we make it with a little sugar with vanilla on top. In Danes, for example, they put cinnamon. In some places it's made with cottage cheese. In some places, it's made directly on the stove, without the semolina, so there are a lot of recipes. In Saschiz, we also made it with rhubarb,' said Ibolyka Macarov.

After becoming known in the last two decades as an UNESCO world heritage site, Saschiz village is now internationally known for its tasty food, shows the ADEPT Foundation of Saschiz on its Facebook page

'What do Macarov Ibolyka and Milk Street Magazine have in common? It's simple: the love of good recipes, local products and good taste! Milk Street is an organization founded by Christopher Kimball, dedicated to culinary education through various media platforms. It includes a biannual magazine, a television show, a radio program, a cooking school and an online presence with recipes and cooking tips. Milk Street magazine offers simple and bold recipes, cooking techniques and culinary stories from around the world, with the aim of changing the way people cook at home. We are so proud to have such great people in our community who take pride in their heritage. Congratulations, Ibolyka, we can't wait to come (back) at your table,' the ADEPT Foundation's post reads.
