Romania facilitates business, security dialogue between Iraq, EU, NATO (official)

Romanian Senate Chairman Nicolae Ciuca says Iraq can count on Romania's support in reforming its state institutions, but also in its economic reconstruction.

Ciuca on Monday welcomed a parliamentary delegation from Iraq led by Dylan Ghafour Saleh, chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Iraqi legislative body.

"To Romania, the security of this traditional trading partner is essential for the stability of the Middle East region. Iraq is a major producer of oil and gas, with which we could resume energy co-operation. I told Iraqi lawmakers and committee chairman that Iraq can count on our support in reforming state institutions, but also in rebuilding the country's economy. The Iraqi side wants to deepen trade co-operation by importing grain from us and attracting Romanian investment to their country," Ciuca wrote in a social media post on Monday.

He added that, diplomatically, Romania facilitates dialogue between Iraq and the EU and NATO on business and security issues.

"Romania already has an active and visible contribution to Iraq's stability through our military presence there. I know the situation closely, as I took part as a general in the Antica Babylonia mission carried out in Iraq in 2004, when I led Romanian troops in the first battle that actively involved Romanian soldiers after 1945," Ciuca added.
