Aeroclub of Romania officially takes over Ianca Airport site to open local club
Chairman of the Aeroclub of Romania George Rotaru signed on Tuesday in Braila for the receipt of the Ianca Airport location, a transfer approved in July by government decision, with the former military airfield to be transformed into a piloting facility for children and adults to be called the Braila Local Aeroclub.
"The Aeroclub of Romania has 15 air clubs where it trains young people in aeronautical sports for free. In this area of the country we didn't have such a club and we found this solution. (...) It can also be a location where we can hold camps for the national teams, I mean to the motor flying and parachuting teams and, of course, the organisation of the national championships. It's a place with potential, it's also well located, because we don't bother a lot with airplanes if we're going to fly intensively during the training camp," said Rotaru.
According to Rotaru, the Aeroclub of Romania trains approximately 3,000 young people annually for free, with the minimum age for enrollment in theoretical courses being 15 years and the minimum age for flight courses 16 years.
The chairman of the Aeroclub of Romania mentioned that in 2011 he flew from the Ianca Airport on a mission that marked the beginning of military jet aviation in Romania.
Chairman of the Braila County Council Francisk Chiriac said that the county administration will be involved in such a way that the access roads to the Ianca Airport are "impeccable" and a project will be thought out to ensure the airport's security "at maximum levels."
With a tradition of over 100 years and with 15 active flight locations, the Aeroclub of Romania has over 200 aircraft and more than 150 parachutes. The composition of the Romanian Aeroclub includes 15 local air clubs as subunits without a legal personality, with headquarters and airfields located in the cities of Arad, Baia Mare, Brasov - Ghimbav, Brasov - Sanpetru, Bucharest - Clinceni, Caransebes, Cluj, Craiova, Deva, Iasi, Oradea, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Satu-Mare, Sibiu, Suceava, and Targu Mures.
