ForMin Melescanu: King Mihai, an example of distinction, dignity, generosity and profound attachment to Romania's interests

Imagine din galeria Agerpres

King Mihai was an example of distinction, dignity, generosity and profound attachment to Romania's interests, and the centennial of the Romanian nation is also due to the role played by the Royal Family, Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu said on Tuesday, at the death of the ex-royal.

In a press statement released by Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE), Melescanu is quoted as talking about how the former sovereign of Romania was perceived in the diplomatic world and abroad.

"Personally, I had the opportunity to meet, several times, the esteem enjoyed by His Majesty in the diplomatic world and also with the general public in Romania and abroad. The efforts made by His Majesty King Mihai I to promote in various European capitals Romania's objectives of joining the European Union and NATO are an integral part of the commitment and success of Romania's international journey," Melescanu said.

He added that "to the diplomats who had the honour of meeting him, King Mihai I remains an example of distinction, dignity, generosity and deep attachment to the Romanian cultural values and to the interests of Romania."

"We also remember the exemplary way in which His Majesty was close to the concerns and problems of Romanians all over the world, both during the sad years of his exile and afterwards," said Melescanu.

He added that Centennial Romania is also a result of the role played by the Royal Family. He added that Mihai I, thanks to his dedication to national interests, both in times of vicissitudes and in the present times of new challenges, will be forever a lynchpin on the historical path of Romania, and also for the values we have to share with future generations.

"We bow down to His Majesty, who placed his whole life in the service of the country with great dignity. We are conveying in these mourning moments to the Royal Family our condolences and the expression of the highest esteem to the personality of His Majesty," concluded Melescanu.

King Michael died at the age of 96 in Switzerland, on Tuesday according to the Romanian Royal House. AGERPRES (RO - author: Oana Ghita, editor: Florin Marin; EN - author: Corneliu-Aurelian Colceriu, editor: Adina Panaitescu)
