UN Security Council to meet in emergency session on Monday following Galati drone incident
Romania's Ambassador to the United Nations, Cornel Feruta, announced that an emergency session of the UN Security Council will take place on Monday at 3:00 p.m. local time at the UN Headquarters in New York, following Romania's request.
'Immediately after the incident involving the Russian drone that exploded on the apartment building in Galati, Romania initiated consultations at the UN and requested a Security Council meeting under Articles 34 and 35 of the UN Charter, which regulate the Council's role in situations that threaten the maintenance of international peace and security,' Feruta said in a social media post.
He noted that Romania's request was supported by partners and allies.
'The drone's intrusion and its explosion in a densely populated area, which resulted in Romanian citizens being injured, are serious violations of the UN Charter and international law. The UN Security Council will meet on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 3 p.m. New York time, in a special session, with the participation of Romania's Foreign Minister, Oana Toiu,' the ambassador added.
