Defense Ministry: Drone that hit Galati block was kamikaze-type, GNSS-guided, carrying 30-kg explosive charge

The National Defense Ministry released on Sunday further technical details following the examination of the drone that crashed into a residential building in Galati in the early hours of Friday.

According to the ministry, the object was a GERAN-2 aerial drone of Russian manufacture, with investigators identifying evidence to that effect, including a partially legible inscription in Russian. The drone was designed for one-way use (loitering munition/kamikaze).

The experts found fragments of the carbon-fibre fuselage bearing Cyrillic markings, as well as pieces of the wings, which were built using the same materials.

The propulsion system consisted of a four-piston, air-cooled, two-stroke boxer engine fitted with a propeller.

Electronic components indicated the use of a KOMETA-type GNSS module, capable of receiving signals from multiple satellite navigation systems.

The drone was equipped with an electronic servomotor for trajectory control and carried a high-explosive (HE) warhead weighing approximately 30 kilograms (TNT equivalent), which detonated on impact.

The National Defense Ministry noted that the components recovered in Galati are structurally and functionally identical to those retrieved in previous incidents involving GERAN-2 unmanned aerial systems attributed to the Russian Federation, including cases recorded at Chilia Veche and Ceatalchioi (Tulcea County, on January 17, 2025), Galati (February 28, 2025), Grindu (Tulcea County, February 13, 2025), Galati (April 25, 2026) and Luncavita (Tulcea County, April 26, 2026).

The target was first detected at 01:46, in Ukrainian airspace, approximately 19 kilometres from the Romanian border and 10 kilometres east of Reni, the ministry said.

Earlier on Sunday, President Nicusor Dan stated that the drone was indeed of Russian origin and stressed that Romania 'will neither ignore nor downplay any incident that endangers the lives of its citizens, national security or the sovereignty of the Romanian state'.

'This is the unequivocal conclusion of the technical report completed by Romanian experts. The investigation determined this on the basis of a consistent set of technical evidence. On the recovered fragments, a Cyrillic inscription was identified (...), and the electronic components, navigation systems, command modules, engine and structural elements analyzed show similarities up to identity with other GERAN-2 drones previously recovered on Romanian territory and identified with certainty as being manufactured in the Russian Federation,' the president said.
