Image

The University of Medicine and Pharmacy 'Carol Davila' Bucharest (UMPCD) ranks first among Romanian universities in the international CWTS Leiden Ranking 2026, both in the overall ranking and in the Biomedical and Health Sciences field, where it maintains its position as the national leader.

According to the UMPCD release, this year's edition of the ranking includes 1,618 universities from 78 countries. The University of Medicine and Pharmacy 'Carol Davila' ranks 971st worldwide in the overall ranking, 80 places higher than in the previous edition. Furthermore, in the Biomedical and Health Sciences field, the university ranks 386th internationally, climbing 46 places.

'The results achieved in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2026 confirm the strengthening of the scientific performance of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy 'Carol Davila' Bucharest and the recognition of its contribution to international biomedical research. This progress reflects the value of the work carried out by our academic community and its constant commitment to excellence in research, international visibility and the development of scientific knowledge,' Rector of the UMPCD Viorel Jinga said, as quoted in the release.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking is one of the most important international rankings dedicated to assessing the scientific performance of universities. It uses bibliometric indicators that reflect the volume, impact and international visibility of scientific publications, providing a relevant overview of the research activity and the contribution of academic institutions to the development of knowledge.

In order to be included in the ranking, universities must meet the threshold of at least 800 scientific articles indexed in the Web of Science database over the last four assessment years, in accordance with the ranking's methodological criteria.
