Swimmer David Popovici is looking forward to competing in Paris, where he won Olympic gold
Swimmer David Popovici said on Thursday that he is looking forward to the European Swimming Championships and to competing again in Paris, where two years ago he won the gold medal in the 200 m freestyle at the Olympic Games.
'Paris brings me luck. At least it did two years ago. That is if it can be called luck. Because we, swimmers, take luck out of the equation. But now I can't wait to return to Paris, to compete there again. I know that the stands will be full, I understood that it is already difficult, if not impossible, to find tickets. I am always happy when I can compete in front of a large audience, even more so in Paris, where I won the Olympic gold,' said Popovici.
Asked whether he is tempted to compete in the butterfly or 50 m, the Olympic, world and European champion replied: 'I like the butterfly stroke. Who knows, maybe when I have more time and I won't be in the mood to swim the current events, who knows? But for now I'm focusing on my events, the 100 and 200 m freestyle.'
David Popovici wants the Romanians to be with him even when he loses.
'Every time I go to another country and am asked where I'm from, I say Romania and it's like there's a small, small sigh... something invisible there. But I'm happy every time I step on the podium with the flag. Those who identify with our country are happy with me and it's good. I say that when we win, we win together... it's also important when we lose, to lose together. That's where the connection is lost a bit,' he added.
Swimmer David Popovici participated on Thursday in the event organized by the National Agency for Sports on the occasion of the launch of the 2026 edition of the BeActive Caravan, a project dedicated to promoting movement and a healthy lifestyle among children and young people.AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Marius Tone; EN - writing by: Bogdan Gabaroi)
