Romania, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland sign cooperation agreement in defence field

The partnership between Romania and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is stronger than ever, defence minister Angel Tilvar stated on Wednesday, as he signed the cooperation agreement between the two countries in the field of defence.

Thus, the minister of defence, Angel Tilvar, and the secretary of defence of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, John Healey, on Wednesday signed a defence cooperation agreement, aimed at strengthening the long-standing partnership existing between Romania and Great Britain while responding to the current security challenges, informs a press release of the Ministry of Defence.

The event took place in a context that emphasises the common Euro-Atlantic values of the two nations, as well as their firm commitment to strengthening collective security.

"It is a great honour for me to sign, on behalf of the Romanian Government, this historic agreement. It is the first document we are signing after the renewal of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Partnership in 2023, which underlines both the commitment of both parties to Euro-Atlantic values and our common desire to respond together to emerging security challenges," the Romanian minister said.

The agreement consolidates and expands the good existing relations in the field of defence with a view to jointly addressing current strategic issues with mutual benefits for the two armed forces.

The partnership will thus address areas such as logistics and defence support, technology, acquisition and capability development, resource planning, communications and informatics, countering hybrid threats, exercises, international operations under UN mandate, arms control, training and military education.

"The cooperation between the Romanian and British armed forces is a tradition. The British are among our most trusted and valued partners, who have always been by Romania's side. A concrete example is the constant presence of Great Britain in air policing missions and in allied command and control structures on our national territory. With the war of aggression initiated by the Russian Federation against Ukraine currently unfolding on our border, this solid partnership contributes to the defence of the eastern flank," emphasised Angel Tilvar.

The agreement will also allow the consolidation of new projects, such as that of the Regional Maritime Training Centre in Romania, intended for the training of Ukrainian military personnel and approved by decision of the Romanian Parliament. The centre is a joint effort between the United Kingdom, Romania and other strategic allies, aimed at providing essential training for Ukrainian forces in the maritime domain.
