AHK Romania's Metz says Romania's economy outpaced infrastructure development over past 20 years
Romania's economy has grown faster than its infrastructure over the past 20 years, and this gap now needs to be closed precisely in order to keep pace with the market's development, General Manager of the German-Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Romania) Sebastian Metz said in his opening remarks at the 'Transport and Logistics in Romania and the Republic of Moldova' conference, held on Tuesday.
Sebastian Metz said that transport and logistics are the backbone of the economy, without railways, roads and ports, there can be no industry, trade or exports, thus, they keep the economy moving and are essential to its resilience. He added that over the past 20 years, Romania's economy has grown faster than its infrastructure and now, this gap needs to be closed precisely to keep pace with the market's rate of development.
In their turn, representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI) expressed openness to creating favourable conditions for public-private partnerships in Romania.
'This could become the main financing mechanism in the future. I believe the German companies present here today bring experience, modern technology and know-how. In Romania, our priority is to develop the road network and modernise and rebuild the entire infrastructure. We are talking about rail, maritime and aviation infrastructure,' Secretary-General with the MTI Mariana Ionita said.
The MTI's investment strategy stipulates that 75 billion euro will be needed over this decade, while approximately 17.5 billion euro in EU funds has been secured so far. Other sources of financing include budget allocations (if 2% of GDP is allocated over the next 10 years), as well as loans and public-private partnerships.
'We are at an important moment for our region. Transport infrastructure is no longer just about building roads, railways and ports. It is about economic competitiveness, resilience, security and, in our case, European integration. The country is prioritising rail and river transport, as well as the continuation of construction of the Union Motorway, while the development of the Danube port of Giurgiulesti is an important objective. We should not view Giurgiulesti, Galati and Constanta as separate infrastructure assets, but as parts of an interconnected regional logistics system. Such a system can serve not only the Republic of Moldova and Romania, but also Ukraine and the European market as a whole,' State Secretary with the Republic of Moldova's Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) Mircea Pascaluta said.
The conference was organised by AHK Romania as part of a business delegation made up of eight German companies from the transport and logistics sector, visiting Romania and the Republic of Moldova from 26 to 30 October 2026.
The event is part of the SME Market Development Programme of Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) and is aimed particularly at small and medium-sized enterprises in Germany seeking to expand their activity in South-Eastern Europe, identify new business partners or participate in transport infrastructure modernisation and development projects. The areas of interest for German companies include road and rail transport; logistics and multimodal transport solutions; shipping and port operations; and digitalisation and smart transport technologies.
AHK Romania is the official representative body of the German business community, established in 2002 and currently with more than 700 members. As of 1 January 2020, the Competence Centre for the Republic of Moldova operates within the Chamber, with the goal of strengthening business relations between companies in Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Germany.
