BrancusiYear/Procession in Targu Jiu to mark 88 years since inauguration of Brancusi Monumental Ensemble

More than 300 people are taking part on Tuesday in a procession marking 88 years since the inauguration of the Brancusi Monumental Ensemble of Targu Jiu - ' The Avenue of Heroes.'

The event is organised by the 'Constantin Brancusi' Research, Documentation and Promotion Centre, and the procession started from the Table of Silence and follows the symbolic route of the Table of Silence - the Gate of the Kiss - the Endless Column.

Participants include representatives of local institutions, the 'Doina Gorjului' Professional Artistic Ensemble, a group of priests, the 'Armonia' brass band, the 'Romanian Scouts' National Organization, the 'Ecaterina Teodoroiu' Targu Jiu branch, the 'Arethia Tatarescu' League of Gorj Women, local residents, guests from Romania and abroad and art enthusiasts.

'It is already well known that on 27 October, we are reviving in Targu Jiu the procession that marked the inauguration of the Brancusi ensemble. It is a tradition in which, as back then, priests and militarised structures take part, scouts who played an important role in that battle of the Jiu Bridge and in the decision to create an ensemble dedicated to the heroes who fought in the battles along the Jiu, citizens also take part, and we have visitors from abroad (...) It is an emotional moment that the city experiences every year,' Targu Jiu Deputy Mayor Adrian Tudor told AGERPRES on Tuesday.

The 'Avenue of Heroes' Monumental Ensemble, built in Targu Jiu by Constantin Brancusi (1876-1957) between 1937 and 1938, was inaugurated on 27 October 1938 and is the great sculptor's only work of public art.

Constantin Brancusi's art work in Targu Jiu was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on 27 July 2024. The decision was taken at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee, held in New Delhi, India, from 21 to 31 July.

The 'Avenue of Heroes' Ensemble extends along a west-to-east axis across the city, starting on the banks of the Jiu River, in the Central Park, where the stone works are located - the Table of Silence, the Alley of Chairs and the Gate of the Kiss. It continues along the Avenue of Heroes, where the Church of the Holy Apostles stands, and ends at the Endless Column, made of brass-plated cast iron and steel, erected in the middle of a park on a promontory.

The ensemble was commissioned by the National League of Gorj Women, chaired by Arethia Tatarescu, wife of Romanian Prime Minister Gheorghe Tatarescu (1934-1937; 1939-1940), and donated to the city. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Oana Popescu; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
