Anniversary edition of 'George Enescu' International Competition opens on 23 August at Romanian Athenaeum
The anniversary edition of the 'George Enescu' International Competition opens on 23 August at the Romanian Athenaeum with a concert bringing together Enescu's heritage, contemporary works and a new generation of performers.
According to an Union of Composers and Musicologists from Romania (UCMR) release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday, the concert programme includes 'The Stone and the Ivy' by Diego Santamaria, which won the Originality Prize at the 2024 edition of the 'George Enescu' International Competition, as well as 'Brahmsodia - Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano and Orchestra, Op. 169' by Dan Dediu.
Developed as a meeting between tradition and modernity, the work brings together, in a highly virtuosic solo ensemble, the three prize-winners from the previous edition - violinist Mayumi Kanagawa, cellist Yo Kitamura and pianist Roman Lopatynskyi - under the baton of conductor Cristian Macelaru and accompanied by the Romanian Radio National Orchestra. Concluding with George Enescu's Symphony No. 1, the programme creates a link between heritage and the present, between Enescu's music, today's music and the artists who will shape its future.
An important moment of the evening is the Composition Section awards ceremony, a defining component of the 'George Enescu' Competition, which puts contemporary music and new generations of composers in the spotlight.
Contemporary music also features in other concerts scheduled for the end of August. Thus, on 27 August, at the Romanian Athenaeum, the final concert dedicated to the Composition Section will feature a programme bringing together leading voices from contemporary international and Romanian music. The Romanian Radio National Orchestra, conducted by Marin Alsop, will be joined by Polish pianist and composer Zygmunt Krauze as soloist in a programme featuring Krauze's Piano Concerto No. 3, 'Fragments of Memory,' Sarah Kirkland Snider's 'Forward Into Light,' Steven Mackey's 'Urban Ocean' and Doina Rotaru's 'Clocks III for Orchestra.'
Another perspective on contemporary Romanian music will be offered on 28 August, also at the Romanian Athenaeum, as part of the final concert of the Conducting Masterclass. The Romanian Youth Orchestra, conducted by Cristian Macelaru, will perform alongside three of the conductors selected from among the active masterclass participants. The programme includes George Enescu's 'Concert Overture on Romanian Popular Themes,' Livia Teodorescu-Ciocanea's 'Anna Livia Plurabelle - Fantasy for Orchestra' (a work commissioned by the UCMR in 2025), Giuseppe Verdi's 'La forza del destino' Overture and Bela Bartok's 'Concerto for Orchestra.'
