Romania's energy production falls by 1.5% in first four months

Romania's energy production fell by 1.5% in the first four months of this year compared with the same period in 2025, while final electricity consumption declined by 2.7%, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Monday.

According to official statistics, between 1 January and 30 April 2026, primary energy resources decreased by 3.3%, while electricity resources increased by 2.5% compared with the same period last year.

The main primary energy resources totalled 10.482 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the period under review, down by 356,700 toe compared with 1 January - 30 April 2025.

Domestic production totalled 5.498 million toe, declining by 83,900 toe (-1.5%) compared with the same period in 2025, while imports stood at 4.983 million toe, decreasing by 272,800 toe (-5.2%).

In the same period, electricity resources totalled 23.834 billion kWh, up by 570.6 million kWh compared with the same period in 2025.

Thermal power generation amounted to 5.783 billion kWh, down by 214.7 million kWh (-3.6%). Hydropower generation stood at 5.119 billion kWh, up by 1.225 billion kWh (+31.5%), while nuclear power generation totalled 3.820 billion kWh, down by 115.5 million kWh (-2.9%).

Wind power generation in the first four months of this year totalled 2.391 billion kWh, up by 265.1 million kWh (112.5%) compared with the same period last year, while solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations during the same period amounted to 1.432 billion kWh, increasing by 298.9 million kWh (126.4%) year on year.

Final electricity consumption in this period stood at 16.533 billion kWh, down 2.7% compared with the same period last year. Final electricity consumption in the economy fell by 0.4%, public lighting increased by 0.8%, while household consumption decreased by 10.1%.

Electricity exports totalled 5.148 billion kWh, increasing by 708.7 million kWh. Own technological consumption in networks and substations stood at 2.152 billion kWh, increasing by 325.4 million kWh. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Cristian Anghelache; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
