Romanian Cultural Institute marks International Children's Day with cultural events for families worldwide
The Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) is celebrating International Children's Day through a series of cultural and educational events dedicated to children and families from Romanian and international communities.
From creative workshops, performances, exhibitions and book launches to film screenings and interactive activities inspired by Romanian cultural heritage, the programmes organised in Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Stockholm, London, Madrid, Beijing, Paris and Vienna, as well as within the European Film Festival, promote imagination, intercultural dialogue and the joy of childhood, the ICR press office announced on Thursday.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, in partnership with the Association of Israelis of Romanian Origin (AMIR), is opening on Thursday at its headquarters the drawing exhibition 'Romania from Grandparents' Stories' - a journey into the world of memories, traditions and stories passed down from generation to generation.
Throughout the programme, children, parents and grandparents will rediscover together the charm of traditional Romanian childhood games such as tag, hopscotch, elastic jumping and 'Don't Get Upset, Brother.'
During creative workshops, participants will make small decorative objects inspired by the world of traditional Romanian childhood together with a local artisan.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Tokyo, in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy in Japan, is organising on Saturday the launch of two books by Dorothea Ko: 'How Does Pepper Jump on the Moon?' (Univers Publishing House, 2023) and 'The Land of the Upside-Down Sun' (Humanitas Publishing House, 2025).
The event hosted by the Romanian Embassy will also include a painting and drawing workshop for children led by Dorothea Ko, a member of the Romanian diaspora in Japan.
On this occasion, ICR Tokyo will present the 'Romanian Books for Children' programme run by the National Book Centre.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Stockholm will host on Saturday a drawing and poetry workshop organised in partnership with the Romanian Embassy in the Kingdom of Sweden. Children will paint, recite poems and answer riddles, and will receive diplomas at the end of the event.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in London, in collaboration with Willesden Green Library in Brent - home to a significant Romanian community - is organising on Saturday an event centred around the Totolino Show circus performance by the Totolino troupe, featuring juggling, hula hoops, face painting, balloon modelling, mime and magic acts. Creative workshops inspired by Romanian traditions, including egg decorating and drawing Romanian folk costumes, are also scheduled. Children will also be invited to a reading session from classic children's literature.
During the 85th Madrid Book Fair, the ICR representative office in the Spanish capital is organising on Saturday at its headquarters the event 'Stories and Experiments - Workshop for Children's Day', led by Andreia Petcu, where participants will discover the worlds of Grigore Antipa, Traian Vuia, Constantin Brancusi and the musical universe of George Enescu.
ICR Madrid will also screen on June 6 the children's documentary film 'The Children's Government 2' (2024, 90'), directed by Ioana Mischie, with Spanish subtitles.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Beijing is organising on June 1 at its headquarters the event 'With Sunshine on Our Cheeks - Let's Draw Childhood Together', featuring an exhibition of children's drawings and artistic performances.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Paris, the Romanian Embassy in France and the Romanian Consulate in Paris marked International Children's Day on Wednesday with a piano and classical guitar concert followed by a creative workshop with linguistic and cultural themes, held in the Golden Salon and garden of the Behague Palace.
The Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna hosted on May 22 an event during which several children from the Romanian community in the Austrian capital performed musical pieces. After the recital, participants were invited to music interpretation, handicraft and games workshops.
As part of the 2026 European Film Festival, the public is invited on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. to the Dendrological Park in Chitila for a screening of the animated children's film 'Calamity, the Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary', a production praised for its artistic quality and the sensitivity of its story.
