Her Majesty Margareta, the Custodian of the Romanian Crown, hosted the Garden Party event on Sunday at the Elisabeta Palace, marking Romania's national celebration on 10 May.

This year marks 160 years since the founding of the Royal House and the modern Romanian state, with this year's celebration dedicated both to Romania and the Republic of Moldova.

The event opened with the Royal Anthem performed by the Representative Orchestra of the Ministry of National Defence.

'Welcome for a beautiful day together! And you have come from all corners of the country and from the Republic of Moldova. Thank you for your presence, which represents great unity, a shared joy in celebrating 160 years of the Romanian Crown. (...) Now we have the joy of being together and we can celebrate this continuity, pride and unity. I wish you a wonderful evening and for us to always remain united. I have confidence in our country,' the Custodian of the Romanian Crown conveyed at the opening of the evening.

The event, held in a relaxed atmosphere, was attended by Prince Radu, Princess Elena, Princess Sophie, Princess Maria and Crown Prince Leka of Albania as the special guest of the Royal Family.

The Royal Family mingled with those present, discussing with a large number of guests attending the 10 May celebration.

According to the Royal House, more than 4,000 Romanians from all counties of the country and districts of the Republic of Moldova were present.

Dignitaries representing Parliament, the Government, the Constitutional Court and the National Bank of both countries also attended, along with members of the Romanian Academy and the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Moldova, a large number of foreign ambassadors accredited to Bucharest, as well as prominent figures from civil society, the business community and the worlds of arts, science and sport.

Representatives of the Romanian Orthodox Church, the Catholic Church, the Protestant Church, the Mosaic Cult and the Muslim Cult in Romania were also present.

The atmosphere was provided by the Representative Orchestra of the Ministry of National Defence, with the 'Michael the Brave' 30th Guards Brigade and the National Gendarmerie Cavalry contributing to the success of the evening.

Royal suppliers from Romania and the Republic of Moldova offered guests of the Royal Family products from their companies. A stand featuring royal books from Curtea Veche Publishing was also made available to the guests.

From 1866 until the abdication of King Michael I (1927-1930; 1940-1947) on 30 December 1947, 10 May was Romania's National Day and was celebrated with great ceremony.

After returning to the country, the Royal Family chose 10 May for the Garden Party held in the garden of the Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest, thus marking the date as a national celebration and as the birthday of modern Romania.

Since 2010, for several years, the party was hosted by King Michael, who was later represented at the event by Her Majesty Margareta and other members of the Royal House.

Moreover, over the years, the Royal House has organised a series of public events to mark this day, such as wreath-laying ceremonies, the awarding of distinctions, concerts, the Royal Marathon, and others. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Daniel Popescu; EN - writing by: Rodica State)
