Bucharest to host Cities of Tomorrow Conference
Architecture and city planning experts from Romania, Berlin, Munich and Warsaw will analyse in Bucharest, during the Cities of Tomorrow conference, between April 28 and 29, several methods of smart transformation of cities, regeneration of urban spaces, digitalisation of services and public transport, using the experience and good practices successfully applied in major European cities.
Speakers include Monika Konrad, deputy director of the Municipal Office of Architecture and Spatial Planning and Coordinator of the Warsaw Strategic Masterplan; Arne Lorz, director of City Planning and Development at Munich City Hall, and Jochen Lang, director of Urban Development, Construction and Housing at Berlin City Hall.
According the Romanian-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (AHK Romania), they will present concrete examples of transforming cities into more attractive, sustainable environments geared towards the real needs of the inhabitants, focusing on the green transition and the integration of innovation into urban policies.
Two panels will explore solutions for transforming cities into green urban ecosystems that support long-term economic development. Discussions will focus on urban regeneration projects and neighbourhood reconfiguration strategies, aimed at improving the quality of life and creating economic and social value.
A multidisciplinary perspective on urban development will also be addressed during seven online round tables, organized online between April 21-23, 2026, dedicated to essential topics such as the circular economy, energy efficiency, urban safety, mobility, tourism, lifestyle and culture, digitalisation and city governance, as well as the reconversion and revitalisation of urban spaces.
Essential urban transformation subjects will be discussed, from the role of water as urban infrastructure, the reactivation of the banks of the Dambovita, to the cultural potential of the green-blue corridors, the transformation of existing spaces into new urban ecosystems to energy-efficient buildings.
Other important aspects of urban development, which can be implemented as a result of public-private partnerships, are waste management and reuse, educating communities in the spirit of the circular economy, metropolitan trains, urban connectivity, rainwater management, risk mitigation and protection of natural ecosystems, the role of digitalisation of public administration in accelerating the real change of cities.
The ideas and proposals at the Cities of Tomorrow 2026 can form the basis for future projects aimed at transforming cities into poles of economic growth and contributing to improving the quality of urban life.
Cities of Tomorrow is the annual flagship event of AHK Romania, dedicated to urban and regional development. Its aim is to create a framework for dialogue between public decision-makers, investors and professionals, which facilitates partnerships and initiatives capable of generating efficient, attractive and sustainable urban solutions.
The event is designed for players involved in public administration, infrastructure, energy, digitalisation, urban planning, architecture, real estate, the financial sector, academia and civil society, contributing to shaping a competitive and resilient urban future for Romania.
