Tennis: Sorana Cirstea qualifies for the first round of the WTA tournament in Miami
Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea defeated China's Shuai Zhang, 6-3, 6-4, on Tuesday, in the first round of the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami (Florida), which offers total prize money of 9,415,725 euros.
Cirstea (35, world No. 35) sealed her victory after 69 minutes, during which she delivered no fewer than 14 aces.
Cirstea is now level in her head-to-head record with Zhang (37, world No. 61) at 3-3. The Romanian had come into the match on a three-match losing streak, which began in Miami in 2022, when the Chinese player won convincingly, 6-1, 6-1.
Sorana Cirstea has won a cheque worth 36,110 US dollars and 35 WTA ranking points, and in the second round she will face Czech player Linda Noskova (21, world No. 13), the 14th seed.
Noskova leads their overall record 2-1 after winning their most recent encounter ten days ago at Indian Wells, 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-4.
Gabriela Ruse will play Croatia's Antonia Ruziae in the first round of the Miami Open, while Jaqueline Cristian is directly qualified for the second round, where she will face the winner of the match between American Peyton Stearns and Switzerland's Viktorija Golubic.
