30th French Film Festival to take place in Bucharest and 15 other cities, 19-29 March
The 30th edition of the French Film Festival will take place from March 19 to 29 in Bucharest and 15 other cities across the country, bringing a diverse selection of French cinema.
The films included in this anniversary edition will be screened in cinemas and alternative cultural venues in Arad, Baia Mare, Brasov, Braila, Cluj-Napoca, Constanta, Craiova, Iasi, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Sfantu Gheorghe, Sibiu, Suceava, Targu Mure? Timisoara and Bucharest, according to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
One of the distinctive features of this edition is that the short film selection for the Young Talents Competition has been entirely curated by master's students from the 'I.L. Caragiale' National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest.
The section's programme includes seven films, covering a wide range of styles, durations and sensibilities: 'Les Silencieux' (directed by Basille Vuillemin), 'La Vita Nuova' (Arthur Sevestre), 'Le Passage du col' (Maria Bottois), 'La Peau Dure' (Naila Guiguet), 'Harvey' (Janice Nadeau), 'Maria Schneider 1983' (Elisabeth Subrin) and 'Montsouris' (Guil Sela).
The selection was made by Maria Crasmaru, Theresa Kondani, Marco Manolescu, Lavinia Nitescu, Alex Petrescu, Laurentia Serban, Ruxandra Tripa and Diana Voinea, master's students in Audiovisual Archives: Preservation and Curation and Film Studies at the 'I.L. Caragiale' National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest, under the coordination of professors Andrei Rus and Iulia Necsulescu.
The festival strengthens its film industry component by organising, on March 27-28 at Creart - Teatrelli, a workshop for emerging Romanian producers. French and Romanian professionals will discuss with participants the strategies needed to develop their projects internationally.
The invited French professionals are Juliette Schrameck (producer at Lumen and former director at mk2 Films), Alice Labadie (Head of Acquisitions at Le Pacte) and Hugo Revello (sales agent and Head of Acquisitions at Kinology).
On March 27, Juliette Schrameck will hold a masterclass on film co-production at UNATC (Blue Hall). The event is open to the public, with free access based on prior booking via Eventbook.ro.
She will also take part in a discussion with the audience following the special screening of 'Sentimental Value' by Joachim Trier, scheduled for March 27 at Cinema Elvire Popesco.
Among the highlights of the general programme are 'Mektoub My Love: Canto Due' by Abdellatif Kechiche, presented in the Panorama section, and 'Misericorde' by Alain Guiraudie, a French neo-noir with elements of dark humour and the supernatural.
In the Young Talents Competition - Feature Film section, four films will be screened: 'Nino' by Pauline Loques, 'Animale' by Emma Benestan, 'Partir un Jour' by Amelie Bonnin and 'Meteors' by Hubert Charuel and Claude Le Pape.
On March 28, alongside the screening of 'Le Pays d'Arto' by Tamara Stepanyan, the festival will host a special evening in collaboration with the Embassy of Armenia, highlighting the ties between France and Armenia.
The Cinema entre nous programme will bring together, on March 29, 'La Jetee' by Chris Marker (1962) and 'Le Cinquieme Plan de La Jetee' by Dominique Cabrera (2024), followed by a Zoom Q&A session with the director. This year's festival visual is based on one of the iconic frames from the 1962 film.
Also within this programme, the screening of the feature film 'La Petite Derniere' by Hafsia Herzi at Cinema Elvire Popesco will be followed by a debate on the film's themes with Katia Pascariu, Ionut Mares and Andrei Rus.
The film 'Love Me Tender' by Anna Cazenave Cambet will be followed by a discussion with the F-SIDES team, while 'La Tour de Glace' by Lucile Hadzihalilovic will be followed by a virtual Q&A session with the director, moderated by Ionut Mares.
The French Film Festival is organised by the French Institute in Romania in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi and Timisoara, with the support of the French Embassy in Romania.
