The prevalence in Romania of overweight, including obesity, among seven-year-old children is 27.5%, while among eight-year-olds it is 32%, according to a study conducted by the National Public Health Institute (INSP).

With the support of the county public health directorates, in partnership with the county school inspectorates, the National Public Health Institute carries out an assessment of the nutritional status of primary school children aged 6-10 under the National Programme for Health Assessment and Promotion and Health Education - the Subprogramme for Health Assessment and Promotion and Health Education.

'Creating a health-supportive environment is essential in order to control obesity and involves active engagement in local initiatives that support the development of parks, cycle paths and safe playgrounds, thus facilitating physical activity for all ages. At the same time, it is essential to support educational programmes carried out in schools and communities to improve the level of information on nutrition and obesity prevention,' the INSP said on the occasion of World Obesity Day.

An initiative of the World Obesity Federation, World Obesity Day was launched in 2015 aimed at promoting practical solutions to support people in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

This year's theme is '8 billion reasons to act against obesity' and reflects both the global population and the shared responsibility to address this public health issue.

International estimates show that by 2035, 4 billion people, half of the world's population, will be affected by overweight or obesity if no action is taken to prevent and control this phenomenon.

According to specialists, people living with obesity face an increased risk of developing other chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and certain forms of cancer.

Excess weight in children also affects physical and mental health, school performance and quality of life, while increasing the risk of obesity and non-communicable diseases in adulthood.

'Each person can participate in and support activities that encourage movement, from local sporting events and organised walks to outdoor activities for children and adults. At the same time, adopting and promoting a balanced diet, both within the family and in the community, by choosing nutritious options and encouraging the consumption of fruit and vegetables in schools, nurseries and the workplace, are essential steps in preventing obesity,' the specialists highlight.
