UNITER to host Canadian playwright Étienne Lepage for public talk on March 9

Image

Canadian playwright Étienne Lepage, one of the notable voices of contemporary Francophone theatre, will be in Bucharest on March 9, for a public talk scheduled for 12:00 at the headquarters of the National Union of Romania's Stage Performers (UNITER). The discussion will be moderated by theater critic Amalia Tanase, artistic consultant for the project 'Thus Spoke...', UNITER said in a release.

The meeting will open with remarks from director Theodor-Cristian Popescu, who will speak from the perspective of his long-standing professional connection with Lepage. Popescu taught Lepage at the National Theatre School of Canada and directed his graduation production, marking the playwright's debut.

Organised by UNITER in partnership with the 'I.L. Caragiale' National University of Theatre and Film (UNATC) and the Embassy of Canada in Romania, the event will explore themes central to Lepage's work: the mechanisms of contemporary writing, the relationship between language and universality, and the challenges of translating texts built on ambiguity, fragmentation and ideological tension.

Lepage's presence in Bucharest coincides with the UNATC staging of his play 'Thus Spoke...', also published in Romania by the Camil Petrescu Cultural Foundation in the anthology 'Contemporary Quebec Theatre'. The text is conceived as a performative debate in which assertion and doubt coexist, and discourse becomes a space of confrontation. Language functions both as an instrument of power and a site of vulnerability, generating a field of ideas that clash, fracture and produce necessary conflict. The UNITER dialogue will offer audiences insight into Lepage's creative process and strengthen connections with contemporary Canadian dramaturgy.

The meeting precedes the national premiere of 'Thus Spoke...', directed by Elena Tudorache, a UNATC production scheduled for March 10 and 11 at 19:00, at the 'Ileana Berlogea' Hall. The performance, which serves as Tudorache's dissertation project, uses a fragmented, performative structure to explore the crisis of meaning in a society marked by polarisation and radicalised discourse.

The cast of the show includes Silviu Lupescu, Alexia Matei, Patricia Flack, Doru Patrascu and Elena Voicu. AGERPRES (RO - writing by: Petronius Craiu; EN - writing by: Simona Klodnischi)
