The Senate marked Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day in the plenary meeting on Wednesday, highlighting that the Strategic Partnership between the two countries is 'more valuable and timely than ever.'

President of the Senate's Foreign Policy Committee Titus Corlatean said that Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day is important 'from a historical perspective, but highly relevant for the present and for the future.'

'Yesterday, and I thank colleagues from all political groups who are members of the Foreign Policy Committee, we marked 3 March as Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day during an extraordinary meeting of the committee, in the presence of distinguished guests. It is a day established by law. We have this obligation - Law 85, which entered into force in April 2023, establishing Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day - to mark 3 March 1921, as it represents the moment when Romania and Poland signed the Convention of Defensive Alliance between the Kingdom of Romania and the Republic of Poland, at the level of the two foreign ministers at the time, Take Ionescu and Eustachy Sapieha. Through this convention, the two states undertook to provide each other with military assistance in the event of an unprovoked armed aggression from the east. History must be properly remembered and the Strategic Partnership between Romania and Poland, concluded in 2009, also from the historical perspective of that day, 3 March 1921, that is 105 years ago, is more valuable than ever, more timely than ever, at present and certainly for the future,' Corlatean said.

He proposed an amendment to Law 85/2023 so that when Parliament marks Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day on 3 March, the Polish flag should be flown alongside the Romanian flag.

'I simply propose, through this brief address, on the basis of Article 3 of Law 85/2023, which assigns Parliament the duty to mark this occasion, that we amend that law so that on 3 March, in addition to it being marked by the Presidential Administration, the Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by flying the Polish flag alongside the Romanian flag, Parliament should do the same. Parliament is absent in this respect and I have no explanation for this, especially considering that Poland, for its part, through a special parliamentary resolution, likewise marks Polish-Romanian Solidarity Day in Warsaw,' Corlatean added.

Tuesday's meeting of the Senate Foreign Policy Committee dedicated to Romanian-Polish Solidarity Day was attended by Presidential Adviser for National Security Marius Lazurca on behalf of the Presidential Administration, State Secretary with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Clara Staicu and Deputy Ghervazen Longher, who represents the Polish national minority in Romania.
