The ARCUB 2026 International Theatre Season will open on 7 and 8 March with ‘Gaviota,' directed by Argentine Guillermo Cacace, a contemporary reinterpretation of Anton Chekhov's The Seagull.

According to a press release sent to AGERPRES on Wednesday, the production, which has been staged at major international venues including the Wiener Festwochen, brings to Bucharest an intense theatrical experience built around intimacy, confession and the fragility of human relationships.

The Argentine production proposes a minimalist and moving stage universe in which a group of actresses perform all the characters, both female and male, creating a close-up and confessional theatrical experience.

Following ‘Gaviota,' audiences will be able to see Mahamaya Electronic Device on 24 and 25 April, directed by Ivan Vyrypaev, one of the most influential contemporary playwrights and directors, as part of the ARCUB 2026 International Theatre Season.

Launched in 2025, the International Theatre Season continues the direction set last year, when the selection included performances presented at the Avignon Festival, productions by major European theatres such as Schaubuhne and works by leading figures of the European stage, including Milo Rau. The theme of the 2026 edition is ‘Crisis/Crises,' the release shows.

Organised in partnership with the ‘Camil Petrescu' Cultural Foundation, the ARCUB International Theatre Season aims to meet what organisers describe as a real need on Bucharest's cultural scene, namely consistent access to leading international productions and to dialogue with major trends in contemporary theatre.

A key novelty of the 2026 edition is the ‘Artist to Artist' programme, an open dialogue format that accompanies each performance. Invited creators will engage in conversations with Romanian artists and the public through meetings and Q&A sessions designed to extend the stage experience and create space for the exchange of ideas and theatrical practices.

The first such meeting will take place after the 7 March performance of ‘Gaviota,' when director Eugen Jebeleanu, who has also staged The Seagull, will enter into dialogue with the show's artistic team in an open discussion with the audience.

In the same spirit of international openness, the 2026 edition will also expand towards co-productions created jointly by Romanian and foreign artists, which will later enter the regular circuit of the ARCUB International Theatre Season.
