German Consul Wiebke Oeser: Clear 2025 not an easy year for Germany, Romania, or Europe
The German Consul in Sibiu, Wiebke Oeser, said at a reception marking German Unity Day that 2025 brings significant challenges for all of Europe amid the war in Ukraine and tensions along the European Union's eastern borders.
'At the start of May this year, my husband and I made our first visit to Romania. In Germany, a new federal government was forming after the collapse of the so-called 'traffic light' coalition, while Romania was holding elections again following previously annulled ones. The war of aggression in the neighbouring country was entering its fourth year. It was clear from the outset that 2025 would not be an easy year - for Germany, Romania, or Europe. In recent weeks, attention has increasingly focused on security along Europe's eastern external borders,' Oeser said.
The German diplomat emphasised that 'it is crucial to pursue cohesion as our goal.'
She highlighted Romania's role in strengthening regional security and contributing to the stability of the EU's eastern border.
'We extend our thanks to you, who watch over Europe's safety here by the Carpathians. Your commitment across these areas, and the strong relations built on trust, form a solid foundation here in Transylvania for German-Romanian friendship,' said Wiebke Oeser, German Consul in Sibiu.
The consul also noted Romania's progress in its European path, pointing out that since 1 January 2025, Romania is a full member of the Schengen Area.
In the same context, Wiebke Oeser praised the excellent bilateral relations between Germany and Romania, reinforced this year by the state visit of Romanian President Nicusor Dan to Berlin and by the celebration of 145 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
